Impossibly small, barely habitable and one of the oldest terraces in East Balmain the owners of this house needed to add space and functionality while preserving the very real heritage value and distinct sandstone construction of their much loved home.
Our response was to build a completely new two storey structure towards the rear of the site and carefully connect this to the original structure with a simple glazed link. Working with skilled craftsmen, the floors of the two front rooms were lowered and the sandstone restored while original timber elements were faithfully recreated.
The result is a unique terrace house that opens onto an internal courtyard that showcases the beauty of the sandstone and fills the spaces with light and air. The new wing opens out at both ends to expand the living spaces into the adjacent courtyard spaces creating a real sense of private space and light in a dense urban environment.
