An entrant in the Mosman Design Awards in 2015, this grand old residence has been restored to its former glory and opened out to take advantage of the spectacular views of the harbour and city beyond. Up to date and containing every modern convenience, the house is deliberately sympathetic in style and character to the period in which it was first built.
Simple but effective strategies include the insertion of a new glazed gallery between the formal rooms and a new external loggia which enables each living space to retain its intended function without being isolated from the rest of the activity in the home.
Set on the side of a ridge, a major challenge was to effectively connect the formal living spaces on the upper-most level with a new in ground pool, informal living spaces and the landscaped yard below. Inserting a new grand stairwell, introducing light into once closed off spaces on the lower levels and terracing the external spaces makes the connection between all three storeys logical and effortless.
